Independent video stores are weathering the economic storm that sunk Blockbuster Video in Scotts Valley.
Blockbuster’s closure two weeks ago was prompted by the cost of corporate franchise royalties and competition from mail-order giant Netflix and big-box stores that sell videos at bargain prices, owner Greg Baty said.
Hers is one of four continuing to operate in Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley, and each has its own way of holding on to its share of the local video-rental market.
The most unusual video store in the area is SLV Video in Ben Lomond, which thrives because of diversification, according to owner Steve Kuehl.
His store, opened five years ago, has what he describes as “the largest selection in the county.” He also sells video games, rents and sells game consoles and will repair customers’ damaged DVDs.
“It’s a question of convenience versus quality,” Kuehl explained. “People go to where the quality is.”
Gaming is a booming sector of the business, he added. “The games just keep coming,” he noted. “It used to be the customers were 13 to 25 (years old). I now have a 5-year-old customer and one who’s 89.”

Every once in awhile something comes along that really makes me feel good about what I do here...the following was mailed to me this week anonymously...it came when right when I needed a boost (I did not edit in any way):
"I wanted to thank you for being one of the finest businesses in our area. It really shows that you are passionate about what you do. You should feel tremendous pride for the job that you are doing, and know that it is well appreciated. Bless you with prosperity. Keep up the good work!
Best Regards, The greatfull customers of the San Lorenzo Valley."
8/24/08 - The famous street shot...
Lots of questions lately regarding the obvious expansion of competing ideas in our market. The answers are simple - SLV Video is the best in the Valley in selection, quality, service and product variety - and essentially there are now only two stores left in the Valley (as of this month - there were eight when I opened in 2003).
It is a tough industry - but we will continue to show our customers what it takes to survive in a world where some local customers would rather spend their money outside SLV...I hope to prove how important our service and products are to those that frequent or infrequent our establishment...
4/3/07 - A store review...
Store review... The following was a review submitted about the store (not a film) from one of our teenage customers and I thought it appropriate to share here...
"I am a current customer at SLV Video and I am very happy with the way they do business. It is a very friendly environment which is why I like SLV Video better than the chain stores. They carry the same videos as Blockbuster, but I choose SLV because of the trust and reliability they have. I really enjoy the way they make you feel like a friend and not just another customer. Customers at SLV Video build relationships with the employees, and that makes people comfortable to return for more videos. That is why I like SLV Video.” - Joey S.
Thank you Joey...
This pic was taken at one of our SLV Video parties...a great crew that helped us get through the 2006 year.
